Most international travellers need a passport valid for at least six months and an appropriate Indian visa. Apply only through the official Government of India portal and check the latest requirements for your nationality before booking.

October to March is ideal for much of North and South India. Ladakh is usually best from June to September, while the warmer late spring months can be rewarding for wildlife viewing.

The Indian Rupee is the local currency. Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger businesses, but small cash notes are useful for markets, minor purchases and customary tips.

Bring light, breathable layers and a warmer layer for winter mornings. At temples, mosques and other sacred places, dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered.
